Saturday 25th November – Hockley
It was smiles all round for Basildon Athletic Cross country teams as they continued their run of success in the Essex league; other events depleted the girls team but the Boys and Senior teams set to work on a well run course provided by Southend Athletics at Hockley , The bright and sunny weather helped the new towners achieve some notable gains.
First up, the U13s set the tone with Freya Seymour and Francesca Turner both claiming top ten positions while U13 Boys Harrison Thorpe, Ben Stokes and Jack Finn all finished in the top 20, The U15 Boys maintained their outstanding form to be the first team home led by Luke Meridew in 2nd place and Jamie Rashbrook in 4th, James Lee guaranteed the team first place with his top twenty finish.
Despite being low on numbers due to the School National Championship taking place in Kent, the smaller than usual girls squad managed a well-earned 5th place for Sophie Wetheridge in the U15 girls while Beth Ashley fought in the U17 women’s race and secure 14th place. The U17 men were just denied first place but secured a well deserved second with Daniel Riley leading them in, Oliver Lill and Luke Savage all finishing in the top twenty which meant they retain the prized league number one position.
Max Jones made a welcome return home from St Mary’s University to claim 2nd place in the U20 men’s race with Brandon Thorpe close behind in fifth position. It was no surprise that the senior women showed they were in great form as usual, comfortably gaining the top spot with fantastic runs by Rachel Wiseman 1st, Kirsty Tydeman 5th and Charlotte Bishop finishing 6th.
Team manager Nick Wetheridge was once again able to heap praise on his teams as Basildon retain an unmatched first or second league position in five different age groups, we are obviously really pleased and proud of our athletes performance to date said Nick, but as a competing club we are always looking to the next challenge which will be the U13s/U15s Essex championships at Writtle next Saturday before the last full league event of the year on the 16th of December at Colchester. As usual we hope to put on a strong performance and know that the other clubs will be making sure we get a good run for our money.
